The promotion of Protected Characteristics at Ladybrook Primary School

It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of:

  • age
  • gender reassignment
  • being married or in a civil partnership
  • being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • disability
  • race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

These are called ‘protected characteristics’.

At Ladybrook we provide our children with a range of opportunities to develop age-appropriate knowledge and understanding through our whole school curriculum.  you will see in our progression below that we have carefully identified and mapped where the protected characteristics are taught in each year group. In addition to our personal, social and health education (PSHE) programme of study, we also use our other subjects as vehicles to promote the protected characteristics.  As a school in which reading is central, we place high quality picture books at the heart of our teaching. Our 'No Outsiders' books (See below) provide our children with age appropriate contexts in which to explore these human characteristics.
