Autumn 1
This half term the focus of our indoor PE lessons is yoga. We have been trying to improve our strength, flexibility and balance as well as getting our minds ready for the week ahead.
In biology we have been learning about natural selection. We found out about Charles Darwin and what he had noticed about the colouring of peppered moths in the 19th century. The number of dark coloured moths increased because the tree bark became darker with the soot from the factories.
To understand this we played the peppered moth game. We started with equal numbers of light and dark coloured moths and looked what happened when we reduced the amount of light bark there was for these moths to land on. If a moth landed on bark that camouflaged it then it survived and was able to reproduce. If it landed on bark where it wasn't camouflaged it got eaten by a predator. In our game we also noticed that the number of dark coloured moths increased.
We are very proud of the topic books that we have made in Year 6. They were our design technology project for the first half of the autumn term. They involved many processes. Our project involved a lot of patience and perseverance. Here we are covering the card covers with our tie-dyed fabric – the corners were the most challenging and we folded them like gift wrap to make them neat.
