Virtual Learning Week 11 (29.6.20)

Week beginning Monday 29th June

Good morning Year 5 – we hope that you have had a good week and are ready to start week 11 of home learning! Thank you to those of you who were able to submit a video – we really enjoyed seeing you after so long. It was also great to see the work on Canada that you have done – some of you have been really creative with your ideas!

Have a lovely week,

Love Mrs Draper and Mrs Gadd smiley

Learning Tasks Week beginning 29th June 2020

Monday 29th June 2020

Reading: 20-30 minutes to yourself – write a summary of what you have read in your school work book. Ask a parent to check it and make sure they understand what has happened from your description.

Grammar / Punctuation: Modal Verbs BBC link: Modal Verbs

Watch the video and complete the quizzes and challenges.

Maths:  Maths booklet – Addition and Subtraction

You can find your maths booklet in Google Classroom. This week we are starting a new booklet - please choose the level suitable for you from bronze, silver and gold. We will NOT be completing the book this week (we want to be half way through it by the end of the week) so would like you to pace yourself so that you do some of your booklet each day.  To keep your tables going, you could also go on TTRockstars, print off a times table square or a game to complete (these are in Google Classroom too). You should spend 30 – 40 minutes on maths each day.

Topic: Geography

Well done for doing such great research on Canada –the work we have seen looks fabulous! This week we are moving onto the second area of our project and you are going to be researching the USA. We would like you to spend around 40-50 minutes each day carrying out your own research on the USA. This week is all about finding things out and making notes. REMEMBER! YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRESENT ANYTHING THIS WEEK - just gather the information as notes in your book!

Think carefully when you do your research and don’t just copy things off the internet – you need to understand what you’re finding out and write the facts in your own words where possible. Remember that you need to check facts on more than one website to make sure that they are accurate.

Before you start, look again at the continent of North America on a map. See if you can find the USA. Have a look at the different states on a map – how many have you heard of?  Don’t forget that if you haven’t got an atlas, there are some maps on Google Classroom for you to use. Once you know where the USA is, you should then find out as much as you can about what it is like as a place and as a place to live eg:

states

meaning of the flag’s symbols

major cities

president

population

climate

land eg: mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, seas, landmarks etc

culture eg: food, religions, life styles, jobs, houses, sports, language

Independence Day – what is it and why is it celebrated?
