Week 3 Virtual Learning 20.04.20

Friday 24th April

Good morning Year 2. I hope you had a good day yesterday and enjoyed doing the tasks. Your check in today is to tell me which poem you chose to use for literacy. I’m in school today which I’m looking forward to. Mrs Fletcher is joining me. I’ve not seen her since we finished school so I can’t wait to see her.

On Google Classrooms there is a link to the questionnaire. This is just like the one you had before Easter. Please complete it as it helps me structure lessons for the future as well as answering any questions or worries you have. Please ask your parents to complete the last section too. All responses will be read and I will reply to you. Thank you.

A reminder about reading books

Parents if your child has finished reading their school books and you are looking for some more you can sign up to Oxford Owl for free and there are a number of ebooks on there including some magic key stories. Once signed in, click on ebooks and oxford reading tree level and then choose the level your child is currently at.

Pickatale is also a good app that you can download. They are currently offering a 2 week free trial. This seems a good app as it will read the book to the children or they can read it themselves. If they are stuck on a word, they click it and it reads it to them. There is also a quiz at the end of most books so it is aiding their comprehension skills.

Time to think: Try something new today.

Literacy

Please continue with the task from yesterday. Choose a different poem and find the WMG. In your poem, I would like you to look for…

  • I have carefully selected words to create strong images
  • My poem includes onomatopoeia
  • It includes alliteration
  • It includes personification
  • I have used a capital letter at the beginning of every line
  • My writing makes sense
  • It includes rhyme

If you can print it out then you can choose a colour and colour each part. If you can’t, you could write the poem out and colour code it afterwards.

Maths

As it is Friday, it is number bond / times table day. Ask a grown up to test you on the ones you have been practising. If you need moving up on TTRS, please ask your parents to let me know on the questionnaire. If you are on number bonds, don’t forget you have the number bond resources to use to practise your new ones.

Extra activity

Today should have been your first gardening / Forest School enrichment afternoon. On Fridays I am going to include a task linked to this. I would like you to complete some nature art. I have added an example in attachments for you to see. The work is by the artist Andy Goldsworthy. Look carefully how he creates art using different items of nature. There are also some photographs of work by other children to give you some ideas. I wonder what you’ll come up with?

And finally….

Have a lovely weekend – enjoy your family time together and enjoy the sunshine.

Speak to you all on Monday

Take care

Love

Mrs Morrison

Thursday 23rd April

Time to think

Try and make someone smile today.

Good morning Year 2. Another beautiful day – hopefully you will have chance to go outside and enjoy the sunshine.

I hope you all had a good day yesterday. I enjoyed finding out which song you chose to sing – some good choices!

Literacy

Our first literacy unit this half term is poetry. At school we start a literacy unit by looking at good examples of this type of writing and identify what makes a good one (WMG). Below are all the features that should be included.

  • I have carefully selected words to create strong images
  • My poem includes onomatopoeia
  • It includes alliteration
  • It includes personification
  • I have used a capital letter at the beginning of every line
  • My writing makes sense
  • It includes rhyme

I have attached examples of poetry. You are going to choose one poem today and one poem tomorrow. Look at it carefully and see if you can find examples of the WMG. If you can print it out then you can choose a colour and colour each part. If you can’t, you could write the poem out and colour code it afterwards.

Maths

Well done to those of you who completed the Mathletics challenges – a couple of you had them done by 9am! They will be there for you to have a go at today or tomorrow if you haven’t had chance yet.

We are going to continue with place value today. I want you to imagine where numbers go on a number line. I have added a link to a game on Maths Frame you can play and I have also attached 3 different levels of a number line activity. You need to decide where the numbers go and think of a reason for your answer.

Other activities

Today I’d like you to continue with the task from yesterday - finding out about animals using the Espresso link. We are going to write these into fact files next week.

Have a lovely day

Speak to you tomorrow

Wednesday 22nd April

Morning everyone! Hope you all had a good day yesterday – did you sing your favourite song? I couldn’t decide until I heard one of my favourite songs of all time on the radio – Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler – ask your parents. This was the first song I loved as a child and have it on vinyl – again, ask your parents!

I enjoyed singing it!!

How did the inference go? Did you manage to answer the questions?

Thank you for answering my questions in the check in – try to answer today’s.

Time to think:

Find a positive story in the news today and tell someone.

Literacy:

Wednesday is handwriting day. Please use the ow ou sheet today – cow and count. Use the handwriting paper to practise these joins. Take care when forming your letters – I hope those ‘d’s are still being properly formed!

Maths:

I hope you were able to complete the place value work and managed to access Espresso. I know some of the websites are very busy at times and this may stop you from going on at certain times of the day.

Today we are going to continue with place value. I have put links onto two versions of the activity. You need to throw a dice to make different numbers – you might need to make the biggest number possible, or smallest, or a number closest to 50. You must decide where to place the number depending on what you are trying to make. One activity is up to 2 digits and the other to 3 digits. You will need a dice and a friend to play with. Instructions are at the top of the activity sheet. Either print it off or record your answers in your home learning book.

I have also set some place value activities on Mathletics. Most of you have completed all the tasks I have set so far – well done! Some of you have quite a few still to do.

Other activities

Science

In science this half term we are going to learn about the six main groups of animals. Animals can be grouped into: mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians and invertebrates. I would like you to start researching each group and write down facts about each group in your home learning book. This task is to be completed over the rest of the week. Next week I would like you to make fact files for each group. You could make a little book again like you did when you found out about Antarctic animals.

Please watch the Espresso videos about different types of animals. Don’t forget to include what the animals in each group have in common. You could draw a picture of your favourite one. Remember this week is research. Next week we will write them up.

Tuesday 21st April

Time to think: Send a letter or a message to someone you can’t be with.

Literacy:

As it is Tuesday I would like you complete a reading activity. At school we have looked at pictures and answered questions about what you can see. Some of the questions we can answer easily but some are trickier and we might have to use our inference skills and have a guess. Please use the link below. I have chosen a photograph of a mouse reading to another mouse and there are some questions below the picture. Please answer them in your home learning book.

I have also put on a link to books suitable for Year 2.

Maths:

How did your maths go yesterday? Could you remember much from before half term? For the rest of the week we are going to focus on place value. I would like you to watch the video on Espresso and then complete the online activity where you use place value arrow cards to make different 2 digit numbers. There are two further activities to choose from. One focuses on 2 digit numbers and the other 3 digit numbers. You need to think carefully about the value of each number.

I have been checking TTRS and have updated your tasks. On Friday when you and your parents complete the feedback form, please let me know if you need moving up.

Other activities

As today should be music I would like you to sing your favourite song. Ask an adult to find it for you and sing it as loudly as you can! Perhaps go into your garden for this. I’ll do it too – I wonder if you’ll be able to hear me?!

Did you enjoy the video about Nocturnal animals and birds? As the world is so quiet at the moment, we can hear lots of animals around us. When you go on your walk, stop and try to listen to different sounds of nature.

I have included a link from Youth Sport which has ideas on how to stay active at home.

Don’t forget to have some fun today too!

The sun is shining, summer must be here….welcome to the summer term! I hope you all had a lovely Easter and enjoyed eating lots of chocolate! Haven’t we been lucky with the weather. I have enjoyed lots of walks and cycle rides over the last couple of weeks – keeping 2 metres apart of course. Thank you so much to those of you who completed the online questionnaire. I enjoyed reading them and hearing about how your home learning is going. Having read all your comments, I will give some general feedback.

Children said they were enjoying spending time with their families and were getting used to home learning. This has been very true for me too! It has been lovely to eat dinner as a family during the week as this never happens in the Morrison household! Many of you said how much you miss your friends but are trying to catch up through Facetime or WhatsApp. This is important. I miss my friends at school and regularly message them. I love my days in school and enjoy having some kind of routine on the days I’m in. This shows how important it is to have this in our daily lives. I understand these days are not normal and as such, cannot do things as we have always done. I know your mums and dads have tried to keep to a routine and break up learning with other activities. Some families do home learning in the morning and then other activities in the afternoon; others break up the day with chunks of learning, then play, then learning etc. Every family is different and what works one day may not work another. There may be days that you find learning at home hard and that’s ok. Please do not feel that you must do a full day’s school at home.If you don’t manage to complete the tasks, please don’t worry, just try to do some learning every day. Your family’s health and happiness must be your priority.

Monday 20th April

Time to think: Do something that makes you happy today.

Literacy:

As today is spelling day, I have linked today’s tasks to these. Please ask a grown up or older sibling to test you on list 24 in the back of your yellow spelling book. Below are next week’s spellings – either stage 1 or 2.
