Virtual Learning Week 6 (11.5.20)

Friday 15th May

Happy Friday everyone!
We can't believe it's already the end of another week!

Today we would like you to do some Maths, Literacy and Topic work.

Maths
Today you are going to continue to work on mass.

We have attached a task below - ‘Find the mass of food in your kitchen’. You will need to find items from your kitchen and look at the labels to find the mass.
Read the instructions on the sheet carefully.
You can type or write onto the sheet or write in your books.
Show an adult when you have finished!

** We have also attached 2 other sheets for you to do if you can’t access your kitchen or if you want extra tasks. *** You don’t have to do these!

Literacy

Today we would like you to edit your Charlie and the Chocolate Factory chapter.
You will need to read through your chapter carefully and check it against the checklist. Change anything you need to change. If anything is missing, add it.
** The ticklist is attached below.
We would love to see your finished chapters. Look at the ‘GC help area’ folder in ‘Classwork’ on Google Classroom if you are unsure how to do this.

Topic
Your topic work is ongoing – choose or continue with activities from the Space Topic Grid which you will find below, under Monday's instructions.

Please could you complete the Check-in questionnaire on Google Classroom at sometime today or tomorrow - we love to hear from you.

TTR
Next week we have set up a TTR competition - Y5 boys v Y5 girls! The competition will begin at 8 am on Monday morning and will finish at 5pm on Friday. You will score points for your 'team' by playing any of the TTR games. The team with the most points by the end of the week is the winner! We would suggest that you only go on TTR between 7am and 8pm. (We may remove points that are collected at times that we consider to be too late at night or too early in the morning!!!) Have fun!

Have a lovely weekend :)

Thursday 14th May

Good morning, everyone.

We hope you are having a good week so far - fingers crossed the sunshine will be back soon!

Today we would like you to do some Maths, Literacy and Topic work.

Literacy:
Today we would like you to do some work on expanded noun phrases.

The lesson is actually all on BBC Bitesize so, if you can access the internet, just click on the link and work your way through the videos and activities.
There are online activities and also links to some sheets - you could print them out or just write the answers in your books.

We will attach the sheets below in case you can’t get on the internet easily.
We will also put a lesson explanation document below to explain what expanded noun phrases are and to give you the tasks – ‘Expanded noun phrases explanation lesson’.

Maths:

Today we would like you to work on mass (weight).
The units of measurement that we usually use when measuring the mass of an object are grams (g) and kilograms (kg).
1 kg = 1000g
We would like you to practise converting from grams (g) to kilograms (kg) and kilograms (kg) to grams (g).
We have done this earlier in the year at school.

We have attached some sheets to help you.
There is a pack of 8 pages
***The first 2 pages are Bronze, pages 3 & 4 are Silver, pages 5 & 6 are Gold and pages 7 & 8 are Platinum.
*** You need to decide which to do. YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALL!!
You could even start at the beginning and do them all if you want to.
We have also attached the answers.

Topic:
Your topic work is ongoing – choose or continue with activities from the Space Topic Grid which you will find below under Monday's instructions.

If you’d like to do more, don’t forget the daily lessons on ‘I See Maths’ – remember to click on the link underneath the video, once you have watched it, as that is where the follow-up tasks are.

Have a great day :)

Wednesday 13th May

Good morning!

We hope that you are all well. Did you watch the chat with the astronaut yesterday? We hope it helped inspire you to even better topic work!

Today, we would like you to do some reading, maths and topic work.

Reading

Follow the link in Google Classroom to find a text about the Moon. You will see that there is a text to read and questions below it to answer. Don’t sneak a peek at the answers until you have done the questions! You could answer your questions in your book or tell them to an adult.

If you can’t access Google Classroom, read some of your book to an adult and ask them to ask you questions about what you have read. You should start by giving your adult a summary of the book so far and by describing the setting of the book.

Maths

We would like you to go on Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars today. You may choose which activities you do but we would like you to spend some time on the four rules – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

If you’d like to do more,  don’t forget the daily lessons on ‘I See Maths’ – remember to click on the link underneath the video, once you have watched it, as that is where the follow-up tasks are.

Topic

Keep going today with your chosen activities from the Space topic grid.

Enjoy your day and we’ll be in touch again tomorrowsmiley

Tuesday 12th May

Good morning Year 5!

We hope that yesterday was a good day and that you’re ready to get going today!

Today, we would like you to continue with your topic work and also do some maths and literacy.

Maths

We would like to continue with more work on capacity today – this can be found in Google Classroom.

Remember that, if you’d like to, you can continue to have a daily maths lesson on ‘I See Maths’ – the link is on yesterday’s entry and Google Classroom.

Literacy

Today we would like you to practise your handwriting in your book. There are some facts about the Moon that we would like you to copy out in your neatest, joined handwriting. These can be found in Google Classroom. Think carefully about the way we join our letters and continue to try the looped join for j, g and y.

Remember! Keep these letters small – s, c and w – no capitals in the middle of your word! Check that capital letters and full stops are in the right place!

If you can’t access Google Classroom you could write out a paragraph from your reading book or find some facts of your own about the Moon to copy out.

Topic

We would like you to continue with your choices from the Space topic grid today. Also, don’t forget that today is astronaut chat day! This week the astronaut is Dr. Dave Williams…

‘To burp or not to burp? In space, you might want to think about this one more than usual... Astronaut Dr. Dave Williams will be dropping by to explain why, as he joins us for episode 6 of Space to Learn.

Dr. Dave has flown on 2 flights on the Space Shuttle and performed 3 spacewalks on the International Space Station. He also lived and worked in the world’s only underwater ocean laboratory to become Canada’s first dual astronaut and aquanaut!’

The show is broadcast live (see the link) at 3.30pm – don’t worry if you miss the live show as they are recorded for you to watch later.

The link is listed below and on Google Classroom.

** Please note that in order to watch this you will need to access a You Tube channel – please check with your parents before you do so.

We hope you all have a great daysmiley

Monday 11th May

Good morning Year 5!

We hope that you have had a great weekend and have been keeping yourselves busy.

Thank you to those of you who have completed your questionnaires – we love hearing how you’ve got on during the week. If you haven’t completed it yet, then please do - it’s not too late!

Today, we would like you to do some maths, literacy and topic work. Keep going with the activity planner for May as well! If you’ve not tried it yet, and would like to have a go, look for the link at the bottom of the page. It is also in Google Classroom.

Maths

This week we will be doing more work on measures, starting with capacity. We have put today’s activities into Google Classroom. If you can’t access Google Classroom, have a go at measuring different quantities of liquids in a measuring jug and reading the scale. See if you can design your own activity to test your scale reading skills, recording your answers in your book.

If you’d like to do something more, you could also follow the link below to ‘I See Maths’  for the set of lessons taught each day by Gareth Metcalfe. This week he is posting a different lesson each day about reasoning in multiplication and division. Once you’ve watched the video, don’t forget to click on the tasks which are listed below it. The link to his website is also on Google Classroom.

Literacy

Today’s literacy is spellings. Remember that you will need to know these for Year 6 so it is important to continue to learn them and to get an adult to test you at the end of the week. Don’t forget that you also need to know what they mean and how to use them in a sentence.

We hope that you’re coming up with some inventive new ways of practising them!

This week’s spellings are:

advice

advise

device

devise

licence

license

practice

practise

prophecy

prophesy

You can also find the list in Google Classroom.

Topic

Hopefully you are enjoying our Space topic grid and have some activities in mind for this week! It is attached below and can also be found in Google Classroom.

Remember that, if you’re interested, the BBC are also providing lessons for children each day via BBC Bitesize Daily – these are being shown from 9am and can be accessed via BBC iplayer, Red Button and the BBC Bitesize website and app.

Have a lovely daysmiley

PS: Don’t forget to look at our feedback on your questionnaire –  it’s in the same place as last time (click on the Weekly check-in questionnaire assignment from last week - click on view assignment - your feedback from us should be on the right hand side).
