Week 4 Virtual Learning 27.04.20

Friday 1st May

Good morning Year 2. It’s Friday!

I hope you had a good day yesterday and enjoyed doing the tasks. Your check in today is what is your favourite food?

As it is Friday, there is a link to this week’s questionnaire in Google Classroom. Please complete it as it helps me structure lessons for the future as well as answering any questions or worries you have. Please ask your parents to complete the last section too. As last week, please let me know if you need moving up on TTRS. All responses will be read and I will reply to you. Remember to find my response:

1. Go to Classwork
2. Click on check in questionnaire (like you did in order to complete it)
3. Click on week 3 (or week 2) and your private reply should appear. Here you can make any further comments if necessary.

 Thank you.

I got quite technical yesterday! It took me a while but I think I got there! I would love to see some of your work – particularly your animal fact files you’ve all been working so hard on. I have posted the instructions in Google Classroom and also attached it today in links below. I hope it works!

A reminder about reading books

Parents if your child has finished reading their school books and you are looking for some more you can sign up to Oxford Owl for free and there are a number of ebooks on there including some magic key stories. Once signed in, click on ebooks and oxford reading tree level and then choose the level your child is currently at.

Pickatale is also a good app that you can download. They are currently offering a 2 week free trial. This seems a good app as it will read the book to the children or they can read it themselves. If they are stuck on a word, they click it and it reads it to them. There is also a quiz at the end of most books so it is aiding their comprehension skills.

Also… For any of you wanting extra activities, Scholastic are offering free home learning activities related to the Julia Donaldson books. BBC iplayer also have the short films for some of the books in case you don’t have them.

Time to think:

It’s a new month – think about something new you could do this month.

Literacy

You have worked really hard this week in literacy – well done everyone. We are going to have a break from poetry today as we will be writing them next week. We are going to share these on the stream so they can be enjoyed by everyone.

Today I have attached a word search for you to complete. Either print it out and circle the words or find the words and write them in your home learning book. The words are all to do with nocturnal animals.

Maths

As it is Friday, it is number bond / times table day. Ask a grown up to test you on the ones you have been practising. If you need moving up on TTRS, please ask your parents to let me know on the questionnaire. If you are on number bonds, don’t forget you have the number bond resources to use to practise your new ones.

Please spend some time today practising your tables on TTRS. I’ll check tonight how many of you have been on!

Don’t forget there are lots of capacity activities to complete if you would like to do any extra. These were attached on Wednesday.

Extra activity

As it’s Friday, it’s gardening / Forest School enrichment afternoon. Today I would like you to make a boat out of sticks or twigs. I have attached 2 links to give you some ideas. When you have made it, why not see if it sails? I wonder how much weight can go on it before it sinks? We are going to be doing weight next week so we can find out.

And finally….

Have a lovely weekend – enjoy your family time together.

Speak to you all on Monday

Take care

Love

Mrs Morrison

Thursday 30th April

Good morning Year 2. I hope you enjoyed the tasks yesterday – I wonder what you thought of the measuring song? Did you join in?

It’s the last day of April today and hasn’t it become cold! Don’t tell Mr Morrison, but I’ve put the heating back on!

I enjoyed reading what you miss at school but they did make me feel a bit sad. When I go to school and into our classroom, I think about you all and how proud I am of all your achievements you’ve made so far this year.

Time to think: What are you most proud of?

Literacy

You should now know lots more about those tricky poetry words – rhyme, onomatopoeia and alliteration. I have decided to forget personification – I’m sure you and your parents will be pleased!

Today I would like you to start planning your poem. You are only planning today so please don’t write it yet. Attached is a planning sheet. There are different animals on the sheet but you can choose an animal of your choice. Write the animal in the middle and then write your ideas around the side. Jog down any words that you can think of linked to the animal. What might it look, feel, smell and sound like? How does it move? What does it do Try to include some rhyme, alliteration and onomatopoeia if you can. Please don’t worry if you can’t.

Maths

Today we are going to continue with capacity. I have set tasks for you all in Mathletics to complete. Don’t forget there are the extra capacity activities from yesterday if you would like more challenges.

Other activities

Today I would like you to continue with your science animal fact files we started on Tuesday. Don’t forget to have a look at the example that I attached. I would love to see your work. When you have completed your fact file and if you would like to share it so we can see what you've done, please add it to the stream on Google Classroom. I need to investigate fully how to do this as its different on every device! I'll update when I know.

Have a lovey day

Speak to you all tomorrow

Love

Mrs Morrison

Wednesday 29th April

Morning everyone! Hope you all had a good day yesterday – it’s got a lot colder hasn’t it. I have loved hearing from you on the Google Classroom check in. Your choices of different items to measure made me smile. From faces to dogs to wine bottles!

I hope you were able to complete the onomatopoeia activity. I have put the answers in attachment.

Time to think:

Find a fun way to do some exercise. Why not try the one in attachments?

I’m going to start by getting you all moving. There is a link to a song and dance about measuring. When I was looking for tasks yesterday, I found this and James and Anna started dancing around the room! Hope you enjoy it.

Literacy:

We are going to continue with our poetry today. Hopefully you now have a better understanding of rhyme and onomatopoeia. Today we are going to learn about alliteration.

There is a link in attachments to BBC Bitesize – a video to watch about alliteration and then an online activity. In your home learning books please write 5 sentences using alliteration. For example

Mrs Morrison made a marvellous mac and cheese meal.

Anna ate apples and apricots.

James jumped and juggled joyfully.

I wonder what you’ll come up with? This could be our check in on Thursday.

Maths:

We are going to continue with our measuring work today and look at capacity. This is measuring liquid and we use millilitre (ml) and litre (l) as the unit of measure. Watch the Espresso video about capacity and complete the links to the 3 online activities. I would then like you to find up to 10 containers (ask your mums and dads if you can use them first). Don’t fill them yet. Order them in size from the one you think will hold the smallest amount to the one you think will hold the most. If you can, I would then like you to fill them with water and pour the water into a measuring jug to have a go at reading scales. I know mums and dads are busy too and you will need help for this so this could be something you can do at any point this week.

Optional extras

If you would like further activities, I have attached several. Please note there is no expectation to complete these; however some parents have requested some extra activities.

Other activities

Today I would like you to continue with your science work we started yesterday about different types of animals. Last week you started collecting information about different types of animals. This week you are going to start putting this information into fact files. I have included an example of one that a child in Year 2 did last year to give you an idea. You can complete this in your home learning book or on paper and make a little book.

This is going to be your extra task today and tomorrow to give you chance to complete it. Please try really hard with your presentation.

Speak to you all tomorrow

Love Mrs Morrison

Tuesday 28th April

Good morning Year 2. I hope you had a lovely day yesterday. I have now replied to all of you who completed the questionnaire.

To find it:

1. Go to Classwork
2. Click on check in questionnaire (like you did in order to complete it)
3. Click on week 3 (or week 2) and your private reply should appear. Here you can make any further comments if necessary.

As it is normally reading today, I would like you to read and discuss your book. Here is a reminder about accessing further reading books:

Parents if your child has finished reading their school books and you are looking for some more you can sign up to Oxford Owl for free and there are a number of ebooks on there including some magic key stories. Once signed in, click on ebooks and oxford reading tree level and then choose the level your child is currently at.

Pickatale is also a good app that you can download. They are currently offering a 2 week free trial. This seems a good app as it will read the book to the children or they can read it themselves. If they are stuck on a word, they click it and it reads it to them. There is also a quiz at the end of most books so it is aiding their comprehension skills.

Time to think: Talk to someone you’ve not spoken to for a while.

Literacy:

In literacy I would like you to continue with the poetry definitions we started yesterday. Today we are going to focus on onomatopoeia. This is a very fancy word! It means words that look like they sound and they are often used in comics. I have attached a video explaining the word and activities to further help your understanding. The first activity is one I’d like you all to do. You need to match the object to the sound it could make. The other activities are there for you to complete if you have chance.

Parents – please note I have included some possible answers on pages 5 and 6.

I have struggled to add this as an attachment on the website so have included the activity in Google Classroom as well.

Maths:

How did your maths go yesterday? I wonder what you chose to measure? That is our check in on Google Classroom.

Your tasks today are on Mathletics and are linked to length.

If you want more of a challenge, I have also added a link to White Rose Maths. Summer term week 1 lesson 3 is all about measuring. There's a video to watch and an activity to complete.

I have updated TTRS if your parents asked me to. If you need moving up, please ask them to message me.

Other activities

Today I would like you to continue with your science work about different types of animals. Last week you started collecting information about different types of animals. This week you are going to start putting this information into fact files. I have included an example of one that a child in Year 2 did last year to give you an idea. You can complete this in your home learning book or on paper and make a little book.

This is going to be your extra task today, tomorrow and Thursday to give you plenty chance to complete it. Please try really hard with your presentation.

Don’t forget to have some fun today too!

Please could you all complete this activity

An example of an animal fact file

Monday 27th April

Morning Year 2. I hope you had a lovely weekend. I was very busy finishing painting my fence and then enjoyed reading my book in the sunshine. I enjoyed being in school on Friday with Mrs Fletcher and she asked me to pass on her love to you all. We miss you so much.

Thank you for responding to the questionnaire I sent out on Friday. I have read them all and will continue replying to you all this morning - hope you find your individual responses. Completing this questionnaire is very useful as it helps me answer questions and queries, decide next steps in learning and provide support for you and your child.

Your check in on Google Classroom – What did you do at the weekend?

Time to think: Thank someone today and tell them why you are thanking them.

Literacy:

As today is spelling day, I have linked today’s tasks to these. Please ask a grown up or older sibling to test you on list 25 in the back of your yellow spelling book. Below are next week’s spellings – either stage 1 or 2.

Stage 1:

Spellings list 26

food

moon

spoon

boom

Stage 2:

Spellings list 26

Please write the spellings in sentences in your home learning book using correct sentence punctuation.

Maths:

Today we are going to start the week with a new focus in Maths. We are going to start with measuring length. Please watch the Espresso video explaining how to measure and complete the online activities. After this, find 10 items around your house to measure. Have a go at estimating first – this means have a guess – before measuring them with a ruler. Your check in on Tuesday will be telling us one of your items; I wonder who will have the most unusual item?

Other activities

I hope you enjoyed the first activity linked to poetry, our new literacy unit. You came across some tricky words didn't you. Could you remember what some of them meant? Over the next few days I would like to you look at and develop a better understanding of some of the more technical words –

  • rhyme
  • onomatopoeia
  • alliteration
  • personification

This week we are going to look at each of these in turn. Today we are going to focus on rhyme.

I have added a link to a fun video on YouTube explaining what it means. Please sing along! I have attached an activity below (2 pages). Read the poem first and see if you can spot the rhyming words. Write a fun sentence using 2 rhyming words.

Remember to practise your number bonds and times tables too. You all have accounts for Numbots and Times Table Rock Stars.

Don’t forget to read your book. I know some of you parents have found the book list useful and are using the Oxford Owl website.

Don’t forget to have some fun today too!

Speak to you all tomorrow
