Year 5 2019-2020

Friday 20th March

Hello everyone!  Don't worry, we're not setting you work already laugh

We just wanted to give you a couple of messages and share some photos with you.

Firstly, what a lovely morning we had today, creating our machine art. You all worked so well in your groups and the finished pieces looked wonderful.  Fingers crossed you will be able to see the photos below.

Today was also a very strange and quite emotional day for many of us.  We can't express how sad we all felt to say goodbye to you all; we will miss you very much.  But hopefully things will settle down soon and we will all be back together before we know it!  Get well soon to those of you who have been off school this week.

Thank you to parents and children alike for your kind words and support over the last few days - it means a lot.  To those of you who are key workers in whatever capacity, thank you for all that you are doing to keep everyone safe.

We are just going to leave you for now with a nice activity that you may wish to do over the next few days.  The idea is to draw, paint or collage a picture of a rainbow and display it in your window for others to see as a symbol of positivity, hope and to make people smile.  I went for a walk with my family earlier and we all enjoyed spotting rainbows in windows near to where we live.

We'll be in touch soon.

Have a lovely weekend and look after each other.

This term our topic is called "Marvellous Machines and Cracking Contraptions!"  It is all about railways, inventions, forces and how things work.

Last term's topic was "Survival: Olive's War"; it was all about World War 2.  Keep checking the webpage for information and photos.

Sport Relief Sponsored Circuits

Year 5 got very hot and sweaty completing our circuits this morning!  We moved so quickly the photos are blurred! Thank you to all those who have collected sponsors.  Please send in the money as soon as possible.  Thank you.

Parachutes

We had great fun making and testing parachutes as part of our air resistance investigation.  Ask us to explain what we found out!

Jade Windley's visit

This afternoon, Year 5 have had a second visit from the tennis player, Jade Windley. We have had a fantastic time practising our tennis skills and working on the Dragon's Den activities which we started during her first visit. Here are some photos of the activities we participated in...

Marvellous Machines!

We were given the task of using PlayPod equipment to move a ball from A to B without carrying it. We soon realised that we needed to have lots of discussion and listen carefully to one another, in order to complete the challenge. We also realised that machines need a source of power and, in this case, the source of power was us! Have a look at what we produced...

Diversity

This week has been a great week! Year 5 and 6 have paired up to work together to grow our minds about diversity and what this means. We have investigated and explored vocabulary such 'bias', 'stereotypes', equality', 'equity', 'inclusion'. Once we knew the meanings of these words we were able to explore where in society we see these things.

We have experienced a variety of learning tasks that allowed us to explore our visible and invisible similarities and differences; to celebrate our differences; to understand that we don't all have to be the same and its okay to follow our own path - reading the book 'How to be a Lion' by Ed Vere helped us to understand this and we wrote our own versions - we definitely don't all have to have the same roar!

We studied the graffiti art of Banksy and his messages about the world before designing out own art in his style to pass on positive messages about diversity. Kandinsky's circles allowed us to share who we are - the colours in our circles all have a hidden meaning!

The poem 'People Equal' by J.Berry and writing our own versions helped us to think about different personalities and how one trait isn't better than another - we're just different.

Our #Great Together videos really celebrate who we are - and we really are GREAT TOGETHER! Check them out on our 'Video Resource Page'

Parachute making to investigate air resistance!  We can't wait to test them out!
Year 5 have had a great day with Jade Windley working on physical and mental health.
Well done, Year 5 - your class assembly was fantastic!  Thank you very much to all the parents who came to watch and joined in with our party afterwards.
Here are our finished sculptures, based on the work of Henry Moore.  We are very proud of them!
These pictures show the process we went through to produce our sculptures.  We looked at the work of Henry Moore, created some shelter poses of our own, sketched them then made sculptures of our poses/sketches using wire, newspaper and Modroc. We loved this term's art work!

We had a brilliant day at Lyme Park, meeting up with our Link School.  We enjoyed playing "getting to know you" games, den building and just having a good chat!  We have discovered that we have lots in common and have made some lovely new friends!

We can only put pictures on the website of children from our own school - take a look at what we got up to!

Year 5 had a visit from some members of Stockport and District Normandy Veterans Association who told us fascinating stories about their lives and experiences during World War 2. The children asked lots of great questions and were very respectful, thoughtful and sensible during the visit.
We have been estimating, measuring and drawing angles.  We worked really well as a team today to practise our skills.
We have been investigating suitable blackout materials.  We planned and carried out investigations in our groups.  Some of our findings really surprised us!
Our WW2 day was very exciting! Our visitor brought in so many fascinating artefacts and allowed us to really experience what life was like during WW2.   We all loved being dressed up in our WW2 clothing (thank you so much for organising these outfits) and everyone learnt so much during the day.

As part of PSHE and our new Linking Schools project, we have been exploring ourselves and similarities and differences between ourselves and others.  We played a fun class bingo game to find out more about each other.

In PE we have been creating an evacuee dance; we are very proud of what we've achieved as a team so far.

We have had a great start to the term.  We have been working hard on building relationships and working as effective teams.

Have a look at some photos of some of the things we have been doing so far.

We have also been thinking a lot about growth minsdet.  Thank you for your fantastic homework. we will enjoy sharing it in class.
