Virtual Learning Week 7 (18.5.20)

Friday 22nd May

Happy Friday!
Well done - you've made it to the end of the half term! Can you believe that you have now completed 7 weeks of home learning? It seems such a long time since we were in Year 5 together.

After today, it is officially the half term holidays for 2 weeks so we won't be setting you any work. (You can continue with any of the tasks we have set though if you miss doing school work!)

Today we would like you to do some maths, literacy and topic work.

Literacy -

For your literacy today you will be revising apostrophes.
The lesson is from BBC Bitesize so, if you are able, the best way to do today’s task is to click on the link below and follow the online lesson (there are videos, games and links to activities).
If you are unable to work online, we have attached a lesson structure below – ‘Apostrophes activity explanation’.
We have also attached some worksheets below to practise using apostrophes for possession and apostrophes for contraction (there are bronze, silver and gold options for the possessive apostrophe sheet).
You don’t need to do these if you are completing the online BBC Bitesize lesson.
You can either print them off or write in your book.

Maths -

Today you can choose! You can either:
a) Continue to work really hard on your x tables using the activities and games that were in yesterday’s task (many of you still don’t know all of your tables and it is really important that you try to learn these before Year 6).
b) Choose one of the “Maths Mystery” challenges.
These challenges include a variety of mathematical calculations and problems. They are fun, yet challenging! Have a look at them before you decide which level to choose!

Topic - continue with the Space topic grid please.

You will find the Friday 'Check - in questionnaire' in the 'Classwork' section on Google Classroom. We would love to hear from everyone today. Please tell us how your week has gone! We will send a reply to every submitted questionnaire.

Have a great day and an even better half term holiday!
You have done a great job of adjusting to home learning this half term - we are very proud of you all. Keep smiling and let's hope the sun keeps shining!

We will be in touch after the holidays.

Love Mrs Gadd and Mrs Draper xx

Thursday 21st May

Good morning everyone.
We hope you managed to enjoy the amazing weather yesterday.  Maybe a paddling pool or two were used? Hope you had some fun!

Today we would like you to do some literacy, maths and topic work.

Literacy

For your literacy today you will be revising prepositions and prepositional phrases.
The lesson is from BBC Bitesize so, if you are able, the best way to do today’s task is to click on the link below and follow the online lesson (there are videos, games and links to activities).
If you are unable to work online, we have attached a lesson structure below – ‘Prepositions activity explanation’, including activities. We have also attached the worksheet from the lesson – ‘Prepostions pdf’.
You can either print it off or write in your book.

Maths -

For your maths today, you are going to work really hard on your times tables.
Find different tasks to choose from in 'Classwork - Maths'.
If you can't access these then please go on TTR or Mathletics or practise your tables in another way.

Don't forget about the boys v girls TTR battle - keep going!

If you’d like to do more, don’t forget the daily lessons on ‘I See Maths’ – remember to click on the link underneath the video, once you have watched it, as that is where the follow-up tasks are.

Topic - please continue with tasks from the Space topic grid.

I am in school today so may not be able to respond instantly to your questions. I'll check when I can and get back to you as soon as possible.

It's the last day of the half term tomorrow - nearly there! Keep up the hard work!

Have a lovely day :)

Wednesday 20th May

Good morning Year 5!

We hope that you are having a good week - the sun is supposed to shine all day today! Today, we would like you to do some reading, maths and topic work.

Reading

Follow the link in Google Classroom to find a text about Mars.

If you can’t access Google Classroom, read some of your book to an adult and ask them to ask you questions about what you have read. You should start by giving your adult a summary of the book so far and by describing the setting of the book.

Maths

We would like you to go on Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars today. You may choose which activities you do but we would like you to spend some time on the four rules – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. There is also a multiplication square for you to complete if you’d like to – it is in ‘Classwork – Maths’. Also, don't forget to take part in the Times Tables Rock Stars competition that is on for our class this week!

If you’d like to do more,  don’t forget the daily lessons on ‘I See Maths’ – remember to click on the link underneath the video, once you have watched it, as that is where the follow-up tasks are. You can find the link to ‘I See Maths’ underneath Monday’s entry and in Google Classroom.

Topic

Keep going today with your chosen activities from the Space topic grid.

Have a great day and we’ll be in touch again tomorrow. smiley

Tuesday 19th May

Good morning!

We hope that you all had a good day yesterday and kept yourselves busy. We're glad that you enjoyed your special message.

Today, we would like you to do some maths and literacy and also continue with your topic work.

Maths

We would like you to do some more work linked to multiplication today. The activities are posted in Google Classroom. If you can’t access Google Classroom, you should continue with the work you started yesterday.

Remember that, if you’d like to, you can continue to have a daily maths lesson on ‘I See Maths’ – the link is on yesterday’s entry and Google Classroom.

Literacy

We would like you to practise your handwriting in your book. There are some facts about Mars that we would like you to copy out in your neatest, joined handwriting. These can be found in Google Classroom. Think carefully about the way we join our letters and continue to use the looped join for j, g and y.

When you’re working check for these things:

  • Keep these letters small – s, c and w – no capitals in the middle of your word!
  • Capital letters and full stops are in the right place.
  • You’ve joined the letters j,g and y.

If you can’t access Google Classroom you could write out a paragraph from your reading book or find some facts of your own about Mars to copy out.

Topic

Please continue with your choices from the Space topic grid today. Also, don’t forget that today is astronaut chat day! This week the astronaut is Greg Johnson…

Greg is a British-Born NASA astronaut and a retired colonel in the US Air Force. He is a veteran of 2 space flights, STS-123 and STS-134 and has served in numerous roles for NASA including as a Capcom for several missions.’

The show is broadcast live (see the link) at 3.30pm – don’t worry if you miss the live show as they are recorded for you to watch later.

The link is listed below and on Google Classroom.

** Please note that in order to watch this you will need to access a You Tube channel – please check with your parents before you do so.

Have a lovely daysmiley

Monday 18th May

Good morning Year 5!

We hope that you have enjoyed the weekend and are happy and well. Make sure that you look out for the special message in the stream on Google Classroom today!

Thank you to those of you who have completed your questionnaires – we love hearing how you’ve got on during the week. If you haven’t completed it yet, then please do - it’s not too late!

Today, we would like you to do some maths, literacy and topic work. How are you doing with the activity planner for May? If you’ve not tried it yet, there are still plenty of activities to do! Look for the link at the bottom of the page. It is also in Google Classroom.

Maths

This week we will be working on multiplication and division. You can find today’s activities into Google Classroom. If you can’t access Google Classroom, make up some short multiplication questions of your own and record your answers in your book.

If you’d like to do something more, you could also follow the link below to ‘I See Maths’  for the set of lessons taught each day by Gareth Metcalfe. This week he is posting a different lesson each day about measures: money and time. Once you’ve watched the video, don’t forget to click on the tasks which are listed below it. The link to his website is also in Google Classroom.

Literacy

Today’s literacy is spellings. Keep practising these as you will need to know them for Year 6. Remember to ask an adult to test you at the end of the week. Don’t forget that you also need to know what they mean and how to use them in a sentence.

This week’s spellings are:

aisle

isle

aloud

allowed

altar

alter

ascent

assent

father

farther

You can also find the list in Google Classroom.

Topic

We’d like you to continue to choose activities from our Space topic grid this week - we’ve seen some photos of fantastic work so far! The grid is attached below and can also be found in Google Classroom.

Don’t forget that, if you’re interested, the BBC are also providing lessons for children each day via BBC Bitesize Daily – these are being shown from 9am and can be accessed via BBC iplayer, Red Button and the BBC Bitesize website and app.

Have a great day smiley

PS: Don’t forget to look at our feedback on your questionnaire –  it’s in the same place as last time (click on the Weekly check-in questionnaire assignment from last week - click on view assignment - your feedback from us should be on the right hand side).
